"1731" Great Britain Medal
19th Century Obverse Galvano Cliché of Eimer-104
(Dassier's James I)
46mm, Bronzed Copper
Choice Mint State
A curious and intriguing piece; a uniface Galvano with very high, decorative rims. Handsomely preserved, smooth chocolate brown, glossy fields. A copy of the James I medal from Dassier's 1731 Kings and Queens of England series. Restrikes were done on several occasions in the late 18th and into the early 19th century. The present piece was part of a rare and unusual set of uniface Kings & Queens medals intended either to be displayed in a frame, or used as game pieces. The reverse is mounted on an old-time, black blistered cardboard roundel. Because this is a Galvano, (an electrotype cast), a process invented in the late 1830s, this necessarily dates to the early to mid-1800s.
