DELTA 6 X 48 BELT SANDER GUARD CASTING - FOR CAST IRON STANDS - ALL NEW
Vintage Delta 6 x 48 belt sander guard casting # BS-264 This is an all new reproduction cast iron replacement casting for the top pulley guard on a vintage Delta 6 x 48 sander that is mounted on the art-deco cast iron base. An original of this casting is getting very hard to find. We had several of these cast from a perfect original about a year ago and they sold fast. As with all castings made using the original as the pattern, there was minor shrinkage but they seemed to be okay. The only problem came to light when trying to install the suggested 4” diameter V-Belt pulley on the sander’s main shaft, the clearance between the pulley and the inside of the casting proved to be minimal. With some grinding, they could be made to work, and better yet if the top pulley was reduced to 3.75” vs 4”, there was adequate clearance However, even though the castings looked great, the lack of clearance was a “pain”. So following that run of castings, we made the decision to invest in an all new scratch-built pattern for the next production batch of this casting. Now with the opportunity for improvement at hand, we stretched the pattern by .25” to provide more than adequate clearance for any suggested pulley. The ¼” stretch of the casting is totally unnoticeable even when placed against an original. This is something Delta should have done in the first place. The castings are well made from high quality cast iron by a professional foundry and have been sand blasted clean, requiring only touch up finesse before being primed and finish painted. The mounting hole is a slot, same as the original casting. This casting fits the art deco base that Delta made for both the belt sander and the vintage jointers. By switching the upper belt guard casting to this one, the cast base originally intended for a jointer will be a perfect base under a 6 x 48 belt sander.
