Rare Antique Children’s Cotton Pintucked Petticoat, c1890 sold in as found condition.

These antique children’s petticoats are rare. They are difficult to find as by their very nature, they receive heavy wear that once they are worn, damaged and stained through use, they reach a point where they would then be torn and used as rags for cleaning or sometimes woven into rag rugs.

This example would most likely have been made for a girl aged 6-7 years old in the late Victorian period.  It is made in fine white cotton lawn, the skirt features pintucked details and has been gathered into the waist of the plain bodice. The petticoat is fastened with two cotton covered buttons and there is a cotton tie in a channel at the neck to adjust the neckline. There is a pocket to one side. The seams are constructed using the French seam method, a costly detail.

The cotton fabric has deteriorated, there some holes worn in places, the armholes have ripped and the seam at the back has started unravel and it has staining, I have made no attempt to clean the apron, please study the photos.

Designed to a loose garment to be worn all seasons under dresses, the petticoat is approx. 64cm in length.

A rare and delightful find that is in need of restoration.

Please see pictures for more details.
