The Lennox 50A93 (also manufactured by Allied Air) is a 5/8" Freeze Thermostat (or "Freeze Stat"). Unlike a wall thermostat that you use to set room temperature, this is a safety device clipped directly onto the evaporator coil or suction line of your HVAC system.

Its job is to monitor the temperature of the refrigerant lines. If the temperature drops too low (indicating the coil is starting to freeze), the 50A93 breaks the electrical circuit to the compressor to prevent a total ice-up and potential equipment damage.
