How to Detect a Faulty Fan Clutch?
- Fan spins excessively when engine is stopped.
- Poor A/C performance at idle or low vehicle speeds.
- Fan speed does not increase when engine is hot.
- Fan speed does not increase until engine is excessively hot.
- Fan blade tip moves more than 1/4” front to back.
- Fan turns roughly or does not turn at all.
- Excessive fan noise at all speeds due to failed bearing.
- Vibration that increases with engine speed.
How to install the cooling fan?
Step 1: Locate the radiator cooling fan
- Turn off your car and let it cool down. Open the car hood and find the radiator cooling fan motor.
Step 2: Disconnect power
- Locate the wire connectors of the engine and radiator fan motors, and then disconnect them. Use two tapes of different colors and pay attention to the connection of the wires.
Step 3: Remove the fan cover
- Use a tool to remove the four screws located at each corner of the fan housing. Also remove the fasteners on both sides of the fan cover. Be careful when removing the fan casing to avoid damaging it.
Step 4: Remove the radiator cooling fan and fan motor
- The fan blades are pinned or screwed onto the shaft. Use a screwdriver to loosen the fan blades, and for the fan motor itself, use a screwdriver to remove it from the fan housing.
Step 5: Install and replace the radiator cooling fan and fan motor
- Install the new fan motor into the fan housing. Slide the replacement radiator cooling fan into the shaft, insert the retainer and secure the new cooling fan and retainer in place. Put the fan housing back in place and fix the screws and fasteners. Reconnect the removed hoses and wires.
What is a Fan Clutch?
- A fan clutch is a thermostatic engine cooling fan that can freewheel at low temperatures when cooling is not needed, allowing the engine to warm up faster, relieving unnecessary load on the engine. As temperatures increase, the clutch engages so that the fan is driven by engine power and moves air to cool the engine.
