Hydrangea macrophylla 'Dark Angel', 9 cm pots


Offered is one small plant of unusual and beautiful hydrangea grown from a cutting from a large plant in the photos. It is around 1-2 years old. Plants are kept outside, so garden ready, however I advise to pot it on in a bigger (1L) pot with a healthy addition of bone meal to allow it to grow and develop more. It is hardy when established but combination of wet and freeze might damage or kill the small plant. It is a deciduous plant, so loses leaves in winter.


Dark Angel is a fab lacecap hydrangea with impressive, richly coloured flowerheads that are shown at their best against the backdrop of the prominently veined, burgundy-flushed foliage. Large flower heads of deep mauve pink blooms with creamy-white centres are produced at the stem tips from July to September. Like all of its type, this Hydrangea will vary in colour intensity depending on the soil pH. The colour of the florets intensifies as they mature, becomes richer as the summer progresses. 


This bushy, deciduous shrub has a compact, rounded habit that lends itself nicely to growing in large patio containers, but is equally spectacular in mixed borders. This choice Hydrangea is ideal for cottage gardens and woodland plantings, and makes a fine cut flower. Height and spread: 100cm (39").


Hydrangeas do not like to dry out. In dry weather, soak the roots with a hose and the plant will usually recover. Remove faded flowerheads in spring after the danger of frosts, cutting back the flowered stems to a strong pair of buds. Take out misplaced or diseased shoots. Mulch young plants with a well-rotted manure or compost in spring. Once established, remove a quarter to a third of the shoots to the base of the plant.


From experience: this is an easy and trouble free plant, fast growing and doesn’t require too much space. It does like water, but mine has survived all droughts of recent years. It looks magnificent and flowers over a long period.



Plants might be sent WITH SOIL but without pots (I re-use pots) and might be trimmed or gently bent to fit within “small parcel” size package.
