We present a super quality expansive landscape study in oils, through a forested valley to the Alps mountains of central-Eastern Europe dominating the background. Although we are offering this work as unsigned, the remnant of an ineligible signature appears lower right. This is a painting by the Austrian artist Albert Rieger (1834 – 1905) (offered as follower of the artist given the signature issues). Rieger was born into an artistic family; his father was the prominent and highly respected landscape and maritime artist Giuseppe Rieger (1802 – 1883). Rieger attended the Nautical Academy of Triest, where he was influenced by Bernhard Fiedler (1818 – 1904). By 1860, Rieger had established himself as a foremost painter of landscapes and maritime scenes, moving to establish his studio in Vienna, where he would remain for the rest of his life Rieger traveled extensively between 1870 and 1895. Always in search of new landscapes of great scenic proportions: his attention to detail, to depth and perspective was exemplary and unlike so many other artists, his eye was near photographic in his attention to detail. While we remain unsure of the signature, this painting is a fine example of Albert Rieger’s work. It has darkened over time, but looking closely into the distance, the attention to the trees, the mountain distant and the undergrowth bears all the artists’ marks. This is what we expect of a fine work by Rieger. Many examples of the work of Albert Rieger can be seen on artprice.com, arcadia.com, artnet.com, findartunfo.com, invaluable.com, christies.com besides the auction sites of bonhams.com, and several provincial and international auction sites and galleries. Presented in very good condition in its original dealership or exhibition frame, this painting will look fabulous displayed
