The Fifth Air Force (5 AF) played a key role in the Allied counteroffensive against the Japanese in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. The 5 AF was activated in September 1941 as the Philippine Department Air Force at Nichols Field, Philippines, and was redesignated as the Far East Air Force (FEAF) the following month. On February 5, 1942, FEAF received its numerical designation as the 5 AF.
