🇯🇵 History of the Gamaguchi Purse

The history of the Gamaguchi purse dates back to 1872, when a Japanese merchant named Yamashiroya Wasuke brought clasp-style wallets and bags from France to Japan.

At first, these purses were made of brass and considered luxury items for wealthy families.

As more affordable materials became available, they quickly spread among the general public and became a major trend.

Over time, with the rise of Western-style clothing in Japan, clasp wallets and bags gained even more popularity.

After World War II, improvements in manufacturing made them inexpensive to produce, transforming the Gamaguchi into a widely loved everyday item for people of all ages.

During its spread, the size, shape, and patterns evolved uniquely within Japan, eventually forming the iconic Gamaguchi design we see today.

🇯🇵 Origin of the Name “Gamaguchi”

Although the purse itself came from France, it is called “Gamaguchi” in Japan for a humorous reason:

In Japanese, a toad is called “gama-gaeru”.

When the clasp frame is opened, it resembles a toad opening its mouth.

Combining gama (toad) with kuchi (mouth) and the Japanese word for wallet (saifu), the uniquely Japanese name “Gamaguchi Saifu” was born.
