Classic Treasures from the Disney History Vault... from the Worldwide Disneyana Specialists of Saturday's Toys...
Item: Sunday News TV Week Magazine
Date: October 15 thru 21, 1961
Description: An exceptionally rare TV magazine featuring Walt Disney and Ludwig Von Drake on the cover to promote the new season of "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" on NBC Television. The new series had premiered only three weeks prior, in color, with the character of Ludwig Von Drake being created to serve as an animated "co-host" for the program.
The appearance of Walt Disney on the cover occurred during an historic transition from ABC television over contractual differences with the network. When NBC (then owned by RCA) offered to televise Walt's program "in living color"... the deal was sealed. The collaboration lasted from 1961 until 1981 when it would ultimately appear on the television schedule for CBS, ABC, and NBC until cable television changed network viewing habits.
The weekly guide was issued in the Sunday News newspaper, notably the first local Sunday newspaper (starting in 1923) to be published in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The TV Week guide also provided viewing information for the Philadelphia area.
Measurement: 7" x 10.5"
Condition: Excellent; beautifully preserved
Note: As is common with magazines and newsprint of this vintage, even though no damage has occurred to the piece, it is likely that a faint musty smell may still exist as the materials have been stored for over a half century. We'd recommend consulting any of the many online recommendations available for mitigating any lingering scents. The artifact is rare and worthy of archival protections that will preserve the item for many years to come.
Saturday’s Toys and Collectibles was founded in 1994 by Southern California author and media historian, Dave Mason. Soon after eBay's launch the following year, Saturday's Toys was among the first online specialists to strategize in embracing this rapidly developing technology. Having delivered over 16,000 coveted treasures since that time, Saturday's Toys is pleased to partner with researchers and collectors throughout the globe.
Today, online offerings of archival keepsakes are presented in celebration of the times that allow for family, friends and neighbors to join in memorable gatherings that nurture the strong connections that bind a community together. These treasures are affectionately represented by "Saturday's Toys." In that light we present our adopted motto (with a nod to the Sherman Brothers): "Oh, let's go fly a kite!"
