1938-S Mercury Dime • Brilliant Uncirculated BU • Full Fasces • Lustrous Winged Liberty Head – Raw, Uncertified
Description:
Offered here is a 1938-S Winged Liberty Head Dime, popularly known as the “Mercury Dime.” Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this piece embodies one of the most beautiful designs in U.S. coinage.
The obverse features an allegorical portrait of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, symbolizing freedom of thought, designed by Adolph A. Weinman—the same artist behind the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. The reverse presents a fasces intertwined with an olive branch, representing the nation’s readiness for defense balanced with a desire for peace, accompanied by the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM.
Fun fact: Liberty’s face was modeled after Elsie Kachel Stevens, wife of poet Wallace Stevens, who lived in Weinman’s New York building at the time.
This coin is raw (uncertified) but clearly Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) by visual inspection. The fasces displays full, uninterrupted bands, and both sides show exceptional original luster and eye appeal. The coin has never been stored in an album and remains protected in a plastic capsule since purchase.
Ideal for both the seasoned numismatist and the collector of American artistry.
