After World War II, the Allied occupation (1947 to April 1952) required all items produced in Japan for export be marked as "Occupied Japan." This was to monitor industrial output and measure pre- and post-war production. The vintage hallmark provides proof of origin and manufacture date range during a brief time in history.

This Pair of Vintage Glazed Redware figurines depict 2 Zebras or Donkeys. Made in Occupied Japan with typical hand-painted techniques. Made of red clay, the firing creates the zebra stripes. You can see the red clay on the bottom of their hoofs that makes the 3" figurines Redware. One ear has been repaired/glued. In the close-up photos, the break looks nasty, but hard to notice in person. When I first saw these guys, I thought they looked like Zorses (male zebra x female horse) or even the extinct zebra subspecies, the Quagga.
