This magnificent 1800's French Empire clock is a true masterpiece of ormolu (fire-gilt bronze) craftsmanship. Depicting Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, and the moon, it embodies both mythological grandeur and refined Empire design.
Clocks featuring Diana were highly prized in 1800's France, often found in aristocratic homes, castles, and châteaux. This example is especially rare, as it presents Diana in a unique pose accompanied by three swans—an uncommon and striking motif that adds to its desirability.
At the top, Diana sits gracefully, dressed in a flowing classical gown typical of the period. One hand lifts a swan near her face, while in the other she holds a water jug from which water flows onto a pillar. On this pillar rests a second swan, its beak open as it continues the cascade of water downward, reminiscent of the swans adorning antique fountains. Diana’s elegantly sculpted legs stretch across the clock: one rests on a pillar, the other on the head of the third swan—a symbol of power. This third swan also spouts water, completing the composition.
The two supporting pillars are richly ornamented with Greek-inspired decorations, flanking the central enamel dial with Roman numerals. The dial is fitted with two ormolu bronze hands. Below the dial, a fringe of fire-gilt bronze ornament adds further luxury.
The base is equally rich in decoration:
On the left, Zeus appears with a goose before him.
In the center, two putti are approached by a second goose.
On the right, Diana is represented once more.
The entire clock rests securely on four bronze feet, giving it stability and elegance.
