An
ammonite is an extinct group of marine mollusks belonging to the subclass
Ammonoidea, related to modern squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish. They lived during the
Mesozoic era (around 240 to 65 million years ago) and had a spiral-shaped, coiled shell that was divided into chambers. These chambers were used for buoyancy control, allowing the ammonite to float in the water. Ammonites are often found as
fossils, and their shells are highly prized by collectors due to their intricate patterns and beautiful, fossilized appearance. The spiral shape of their shells, which can range from tightly coiled to more elongated, is characteristic of the species. Ammonites varied greatly in size, with some being very small, while others could grow to be several feet in diameter.
