offered for purchase is a silk screened banner from the incredibly important Arts of the Raven: Masterworks by the Northwest Coast Indian at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Bill Reid co-curated this exhibition which was critical in shifting how Northwest Coast Native art became to be viewed as fine art rather than as ethnographic artifacts.
This banner features the theme design that Bill Reid created for the exhibition and, given its vintage and the importance of the exhibition, was likely overseen by the artist. The design was adapted and redrawn form the left panel of the Denver Art Museum's famed Double Raven Screen of the Huna Tlingit (ca. 1850). The theme design appeared on brochures, posters and street banners advertising the show (such as this one),
A similar banner is held in the collection of the Burke Museum in Seattle, Washington. Search for artist Bill Reid on their collections search page and it is object 2013-158/4.
The banner measures 31 1/4" by 45 1/2"
