The Sailor Susutake is often released as a plain version. Not this one. 

The pen here offered for sale shows an higly decorative and handcrafted purple, green and gold colour strings in the area where the cap meets with the barrel. As always a pure gold badge with Nagahara’s name is embossed at the bottom of the barrel.

Excellent pre-owned and gently used condition (a small scratches to the section is barely visible (see photos). 

This elusive writing instrument comes complete with its original Nagahara Nobuyoshi wooden box, white outer box, papers, yellow polishing cloth, autographed kimono, ensuring its pristine condition and adding to its collector's value.

 
The literal translation of Susutake is "smoked bamboo." Each of these pens is unique and handmade. The bamboo is obtained from the ancient roofs of traditional Japanese thatched-roof style houses. 
Due to the scarcity of this material and the craft involved in working with it, production of each individual pen can take up to two years. The coloring comes from continuous exposure to the "ironi," a Japanese sunken fireplace. Different colour tones are created depending on the location of the timbers and the amount of smoke they were exposed to. 
This material, exceeding 150 years in age, is becoming increasingly rare in a Japan that is rapidly urbanizing.
