Antique Victorian Gesso & Wood Frame w/ Hand-Tinted Portrait

Offered for sale is an antique framed portrait, likely dating to the late Victorian or early Edwardian era (circa 1890–1910). The image depicts a woman in period dress. Her hairstyle (a "Gibson Girl" bun) and the high-boned collar of her dress date the original photograph to between 1895 and 1905.

The Jewelry: She is wearing a slide necklace (also called a guard chain) with a decorative slide and likely a watch or locket tucked into her belt or a pocket. This was the height of fashion for a woman of status in the late Victorian/early Edwardian era.

The frame is an ornate Gesso-on-wood frame, typical of the late 1800s. The intricate "carved" scrolling is actually a mixture of plaster, glue, and whiting (gesso) that was molded and applied to a wooden base, then gilded or painted.

Condition Note: You can see a small chip in the upper right corner where the gesso and wood is exposed under the gold/bronze paint. This confirms it is a molded frame rather than hand-carved wood.

The photograph itself features floral embellishments in the corners. The floral elements in the corners are known as "Chromolithograph Scraps." In the late 19th century, these colorful, embossed paper cutouts were sold in sheets;

it was a common folk-art tradition to "dress up" a portrait by placing these scraps under the glass. The yellow roses and blue accents often symbolized remembrance or devotion.

This piece displays beautifully and would be well-suited for collectors of antique photography, Victorian décor, or historic portraiture.
