Edward Sheriff Curtis was an American photographer and ethnologist whose work focused on the American West and Native American people. Many Native Americans Curtis photographed called him Shadow Catcher.
Edward S. Curtis began photographing Native Americans in the mid 1890s with his first known portrait of a Native American being Princess Angeline, daughter of Chief Seattle, in 1895. This encounter sparked his lifelong interest in documenting Indigenous cultures. His major project, "The North American Indian," which spanned from 1900 to 1930, involved photographing over seventy tribes across the continent. THESE PRINTS ARE FROM A 1975 PRINTING. THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE PRINT IS BLANK EXCEPT FOR THE TITLE OF THE PRECEDING PRINT ON THE BOTTOM EDGE.
