ARTIST: W H Foster, mid 19thC British School, after David Teniers the Younger (British 1619 – 1690) SUBJECT: A serviceman in a tavern being served at a table; ascribed to an old label verso, possibly by the artist’ hand ‘The Travellers Solace’ and an inscription quoting from Shakespeare; part of which is missing and has been overwritten with, presumably, the missing text, ascribing the artist to W H Foster MEDIUM: Oil on panel SIGNATURE: Monogrammed lower right DATE: c1850 – 1880 in our opinion SIZE: frame 39 x 31cm (15 x 12 inches) Frame 49 x 43cm (19 x 17 inches), depth 9cm (3.5 inches) PROVENANCE: Country estate auction, private collection; Original labels verso including what appears to be an early auction sale label CONDITION: Good, overall, for its age; couple of minor spots, one to the top right corner noticed, do not overly detract FRAME: Original or close-to period swept frame, a good quality example; gesso edging is loose but can easily be reaffixed if shaken during transit
