A most unusual old walnut telephone box
I've encountered hundreds of old walnut boxes, mostly 1909-1920s that were simple ringer boxes with bells, and have been around the world, but have not seen this kind of arrangement in a box of this size in my 89 years.
It is not much short of beautiful. It has been refinished. A diagram is pasted inside the door with symbols of a retardation coil, induction coil, condenser, rectifier, resistor coil, strips, and straps. These items are in the box plainly and on the door joined with cloth-covered wires in a neat pattern using a 15-screw connection block. The diagram is titled: "Case, Coil, and Condenser N616 MK.2"
The parts look to me to be of 1920s-1930s manufacture. The box has finger joints and the four wooden "feet" on the back keep it away from wires on the wall. Some would call this a magnificent piece of furniture. I read in the early 1960s that the U.S. over-harvested walnut to the point that by 1905 or 1906, furniture from then on had to be made of oak. Not so in Europe?
Slightly puzzling to me is the year of manufacture. Call me 10:00 AM-8:00 PM Central Time; I'll tell you why. An artist might ask more than $68.00 for just the beauty of the wood.
