Set of 2 Vintage Japanese Majolica Pelican & Bird in Tree Trunk Flower Holders

Step into a world where art and nature blend seamlessly—where each piece of pottery tells a story of craftsmanship, tradition, and the quiet beauty of birds in their natural habitat. This set of two vintage Japanese majolica pottery flower holders is more than just a pair of decorative pieces; they are windows into a time when artistry was meticulous, and every curve of ceramic was shaped with intention.

The first piece, a majolica-glazed pelican flower holder, captures the elegance of this magnificent bird in stunning detail. The pelican, a symbol of wisdom, resilience, and abundance, has long been associated with prosperity and protection. Imagine this serene figure perched on a windowsill or nestled among your favorite blooms—an ever-watchful guardian of your space, bringing both beauty and meaning into your home.

The second piece, a charming bird perched on a tree trunk, evokes the delicate balance of nature. The finely sculpted details of the wings, the textured bark, and the majolica’s signature rich glaze make this a striking example of Japanese ceramic mastery. The bird, perhaps pausing in song, invites a sense of tranquility into any room. Together, these two pieces tell a story of the avian world—of flight, rest, and the poetry of nature captured in clay.

These exquisite flower holders are rooted in the majolica tradition, a glazing technique that originated in Italy but was perfected by Japanese artisans in the early 20th century. Japanese majolica became renowned for its bold color palettes, detailed relief work, and masterful craftsmanship, often reflecting themes of nature and wildlife. While the specific artist of these pieces remains unknown, they carry the unmistakable influence of the great ceramic houses of Japan, where skilled potters spent lifetimes perfecting their craft.

Perhaps these were once displayed in an elegant mid-century home, a cherished part of a collector’s display, or a gift given with heartfelt intention. Now, they wait for their next chapter. Will they brighten your dining table, add charm to your garden nook, or become the thoughtful gift for a loved one who adores vintage finds and the beauty of nature?

This set of two is rare to find together, making it a true collector’s treasure. Whether you are a lover of Japanese pottery, a vintage enthusiast, or someone who simply appreciates the timeless elegance of handcrafted art, these flower holders are sure to capture your heart.

Condition: Previously owned, in good condition. Shows signs of use. The bird on the tree trunk appears to have been repaired, as there is a crack and visible glue marks; the paint is worn throughout the piece. The pelican has some chips on the lower edge and features a "Made in Japan" stamp on the bottom; its paint also shows signs of wear. A thorough cleaning is recommended before use. Please carefully review the photos for more details.

SHIPPING

We strive to package items so that they are not damaged during shipping. However, if item breakage occurs during shipping an insurance claim will need to be processed. Please see the INSURANCE AND / OR REFUND section for more information on starting a claim. The price of the shipping is an estimate of the furthest location possible we can ship. We are happy to provide a refund for any extra in the shipping.

If you are using a PO-BOX as shipping address, consider that you might have an increase in the price of your shipping. This happens because USPS charges more for this kind of delivery, especially for larger and heavier packages.

We use UPS as our primary shipping company.

We plan to ship with insurance.

If you are an international purchaser, you have two choices:

1)   Sign up with eBay for International Shipping Program. This allows you to see the domestic (USA) shipping costs as well as international shipping, handling, and other fees. The import charges include any customs duties, taxes, brokerage, and other fees. This means that we as the seller will send your item to the global shipping center, and it will be shipped to you from there. This option allows eBay to take care of the shipping process for you.

Our shipping price is based on the use of lots of shipping material to avoid any damage to the product. However, this does not mean that damage to the item will not happen.

INSURANCE AND / OR REFUND

To start an insurance claim, it is important that you send us pictures of all damage/pieces of the broken item, the packaging inside the box, and the external packaging. Please keep all packaging until any damage inspection is complete. The claim process may take upwards of 10 weeks (about 2 and a half months) to complete. Please be patient and we will keep you informed of the progress.

If your item arrives with damage due to the shipping process, we are happy to reimburse you. This reimbursement can work in two ways:

TOTAL REFUND: A total refund will ONLY happen if the item was completely lost or damaged in a way that renders it unusable. To receive a complete refund, you need to photograph and send pictures of the broken item and the packing box. Then you must package and ship the damaged item back, including the broken pieces. The buyer is required to pay the return shipping costs. A total refund can also happen if you are dissatisfied with your item. In this case the packaging and return of the item is also mandatory.

PARTIAL REFUND: A partial refund will happen if your item was damaged due to the shipping process. The value of the partial refund will be discussed and agreed upon between buyer and seller. To receive a partial refund, the buyer needs to send pictures of all damaged pieces, the packing box the item was sent in and material the item was sent with. The buyer is required to keep the damaged pieces and packing material until the process is finalized
