Despite being raised from childhood in New Orieans, biues dnger-guitarist Boogie Biii Webb was actuaDy born (in 1924) in Jackson, Misissippi. Aithough his musical repertoire grew to reflect the muiftude of styles he encountered both in the Crescent City and during an earby 1 960s sojoum in Chicago, the mechanics of his piaying remained defianty 'downhome' in nature, much in the manner of his original south Misissippi influences.
These included men like Rooseveit Holts and Tommy Johnson, boUh of whom Webb met and studied with as a boy, 'Bubba' Brown and Carey Lee Simmons. Johnson, who was reguiariy brought to New Orieans by Webb's mother to perform at house parties and fish fries, exerted a particuiariy strong and bng-iasting influence on the fledgDng guitarist and indeed, at the tme ot Webb's death in 1990, he was one of the {ew biuesmen stiii piaying Jdhnson's exacting compoitions with any reguiarity.
Towards the end of the 1 940s, Biii worked briefly with such unlikeiy partners as Chuck Bemy and Fats Domino and in iater years his music brought him into contact with the iikes of Jimmy Reed, Jdhn Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters as well. He never recorded with any of these artists, but in 1952 he did cut tour sides for the famous imperiai iabe. His rough periorming styie simpiy served to distance Webb from the New Orioans R and B mainstream however, and his subsequent recordings were few and tar between. Researcher David Evans ta,oed a dew things by Boogie Biii and his mentor Hdts in 1969, tor instance, but Webb's first solo album did not appear untD some twenty years later.
