Lord and Taylor
Lord + Taylor

Founded in 1826 and defunct due to bankruptcy in 2021, Lord & Taylor was the oldest department store in the United States. Although resurrected online only, the days of this brick and mortar might department store are over.

English-born Samuel Lord started a dry goods business in New York City in 1824 and opened the original store that would become Lord & Taylor in 1826, on Catherine Street in what is now Two Bridges, Manhattan. The shop stocked hosiery, misses' wear, and cashmere shawls. His wife's cousin, George Washington Taylor, joined in 1834, and the store was named Lord & Taylor.

Those of you who used to shop there will remember that if you purchased an item at Lord + Taylor, they gave you a box and tissue paper to go with it for free.  This one would have been used for ties (if rolled), socks, maybe a small wallet or belt (if rolled).
