This vintage antique African art piece is a hand-carved wood mask from the Chokwe tribe. The mask, known as a Mwana mask, features primitive tribal arts with traditional Chokwe design elements.
Chokwe masks are a vital part of Chokwe culture and history. They are used in ceremonies, festivals, and other cultural events to celebrate their heritage.
History
The Chokwe people are part of a matrilineal society, and their history is linked to the Lunda Empire.
The cultural ideals of Chokwe masks developed before the colonial period.
Some Chokwe people converted to Christianity during the colonial era, but they kept their ancient beliefs.
I found this mask at an estate sale in Little Rock, Arkansas. It was located in a historic house in downtown. I pulled this mask down from the wall. It was among many other mask. It was covered in dust so I took it home and cleaned it and oiled it. It is in good condition for its age. It has string to be hung on wall.
