Edition of 1767 of this scarce collection of two works by the polymath physician Jan Johnston (1603-1675) author of different books.

The first one is a volume about the natural history of fishes and cetaceans.

The work is illustrated by out of text 47 plates by Caspar and Matthaus Merian (1621-1687) showing different species of fishes between them a mermaid.

The second work of 1757 is the natural history of snakes.

The text is enriched by twelve plates showing different different speices of snakes, dragons, two species of hydra and a basilisk.

Ex libris in the front counterplate. 

In good conditions and complete.

Carton coeval cover with handwritten title in the spine in good general conditions lightly worn in the extremities. Missing parts. Binding in fair conditions with light cracks. Inside pages are in good conditions with occasional foxing. In folio. Dim. 35x22 cm. Pp. 228+XLVII.+55+(3)+XII. Weight Kg. 0,985.

Edizione del 1767 di questa rara raccolta di due opere del medico polimata Jan Johnston (1603-1675) autore di molti libri.

La prima è un volume sulla storia naturale dei pesci e cetacei.

L'opera è illustrata da 47 tavole fuori testo di Caspar e Matthaus Merian (1621-1687) che mostrano numerose specie di pesci tra cui una sirena.

La seconda opera del 1757 è la storia naturale dei serpenti.

Il testo è impreziosito da dodici tavole che mostrano varie specie di serpenti, draghi, due specie di Idra e il basilisco.

"I libri di storia naturale di John Jonston (1603-75) medico e naturalista di origine scozzese, costituiscono un importante documento sulle cognizioni zologiche del sec. XVII e hanno all'incirca lo stesso carattere delle opere di Gesner" Cfr. Diz. Treccani, VI p. 311.
