Antique Poster Print
"Giovanni Gallurese" (opera)
from the Ricordi Portfolio
Milano, Italy
~ 1914 ~
This is Leopoldo Metlicovitz's famous poster for Montemezzi's first opera "Giovanni Gallurese" originally performed in Milan on November 11, 1905.
Leopoldo Metlicovitz (1868-1944) was an Italian painter, illustrator and poster designer. Together with Leonetto Cappiello, Adolf Hohenstein, Giovanni Maria Mataloni and Marcello Dudovich, he is considered one of the fathers of modern Italian poster art.
This vibrant small-sized poster was created in 1914 using stone lithography ~ just as its larger predecessor was ~ creating this dazzling print. It measures 10.25 x 14.25 inches. It retains its full margins, as published. My scanner was unable to capture the full margins so please refer to the photographs as well.
Published in 1914 around World War I, this print comes the rare Ricordi Portfolio which consisted of 70 small lithographic plates of Ricordi's greatest posters printed between 1895 and 1914. The set was sold commercially in Italy, England, Germany, France and the United States. Much like the famous "Masters of the Poster" series created by Cheret in Paris, the Ricordi Portfolio celebrated the rise of the poster - which in Italy was almost single-handedly accomplished by Ricordi.
