This collection of TV episodes from The Hudson Brothers' Saturday
morning television program is chock full of slapstick comedy for kids,
the talented trio and their cohorts engaging in very pronounced
Vaudeville, think ROWAN & MARTIN'S LAUGH IN for the younger set.
Even Andy Griffith and Danny Thomas in their interesting guest
appearances slip into over the top performances which appear geared
towards adolescent minds that need larger explanations of the skits.
These shows are very colorful, the 1974/1975 program dipped in pastels
and even psychedelia from eight years prior, though the wardrobe and
haircuts put the boys smack dab in the middle of the 1970s. There's
plenty of fast-paced action shots and tons of insanity which subsides
somewhat when the brothers perform their pop songs. Bill, Brett and Mark
exhibit their impeccable vocals on the lip-synched renditions of their
music - always with matching clothes, three guitars and sugary sweet
vocal stylings. The Beatles/Monkees influenced tunes provide a much
needed break from the spitfire pace of all the action - and may be the
most appealing aspect of this treasure trove of lost television.
Stretched across three generous DVDs including bonus tracks, this huge
package has a lot to offer and, yes, their biggest hit, 1974's "So You
Are A Star", is included. The material is imaginative but can be a bit
overwhelming in one setting as some of it is dated and much of it
somewhat grating for adult viewers.
