Tall, antique, Bristol green, glass jug with fluted rim and applied handle
Decorated in 'Mary Gregory' white enamels and fired twice
Antique enameled glass, with scenes featuring children are referred to as 'Mary Gregory glass' due to a mistaken attribution
There was a Mary Gregory, who decorated glass in America, in the late 19th Century, but she painted landscapes, rather than the figures of children that became synonymous with this style
It actually originated in Bohemia (present-day Czechia) around 1880, before Mary Gregory's time. Despite the misconception, the name 'Mary Gregory glass' arose in the 1920s, likely due to the association of a female artist with the delicate, child-like nature of the decorations, and it's been with us ever since
Excellent condition. No chips or cracks. Some surface scratches commensurate with age, but nothing significant. Please examine photos carefully as these are part of the condition description
