About
This happy little book goes deep into what the author postulates makes culture tick ... by examining examples of seemingly crazy cultural practices and contradictions around the world, in history and the present, from the Middle East to the Amazon, New Guinea and Medieval Europe.
Marvin Harris (1927-2001) is the man to set you straight! He doesn't shirk from confronting the big issues! Harris, an American anthropologist, was a prolific writer, and highly influential in the development of cultural materialism and environmental determinism. He combined Karl Marx's emphasis on the forces of production with Thomas Malthus's insights on the impact of demographic factors on other parts of the sociocultural system.
Several Harris publications examine the cultural and material roots of dietary traditions in many cultures, including this book: Cows, Pigs, Wars, and Witches: The Riddles of Culture (1975); Good to Eat: Riddles of Food and Culture (1998; originally titled The Sacred Cow and the Abominable Pig) and his co-edited volume, Food and Evolution: Toward a Theory of Human Food Habits (1987).
