Description

This is a veteran, used, but still presentable, "Twenty-Five Million Drachmai" note from the still Axis controlled ΤΡΑΠΕΖΑ ΤΗΣ ΕΛΛΑΔΟΣ or “Bank of Greece”. It is dated August 10, 1944 during World War II, just before the Germans and Italians were driven out of Greece. The withdrawal began in early October and the last of the occupying troops were gone by November 3, 1944.

Back on October 28, 1940 Fascist Italy had declared war and invaded Greece. The Greeks responded by kicking the Italians all the way back into Albania. Winston Churchill: "Hence we will not say that Greeks fight like heroes, but we will say that heroes fight like Greeks". However, in April of 1941 Hitler marched into Greece and from then until November of 1944, just after this note was issued, Greece was conquered and occupied.
