Intro:
Northern Exposure debuted in the summer of 1990 as a "replacement"
series, and after developing a sizeable and faithful following, soon
became a regular staple of CBS's Monday night line-up.
Created by Joshua Brand and John Falsey,
Northern Exposure chronicled the plight of the New York-bred Joel
Fleischman (played by Rob Morrow), a medical intern forced to repay
his scholarship by serving for four years as general practitioner in
the remote town of Cicely, Alaska.
Over the course of the series' 110
episodes, Dr. Fleischman evolved from contempt to tolerance of the
unfamiliar lifestyle of Cicely and its quirky, eccentric residents,
while coping with an unpredictable and volatile relationship/rivalry
with courier-pilot Maggie O'Connell (played by co-star Janine
Turner).
In the final season, Joel at last seemingly embraced the philosophy of
Cicely and, for a time, attempted to retreat even further from
modern-day society. In the end, however, New York City beckoned and
Joel returned, leaving Cicely behind.
The series did not survive Rob Morrow's
departure and CBS's subsequent neglect and, to the dismay of loyal
followers, was cancelled at the end of the 1994-95 season.
Plot Synopsis:
Joel Fleishman is fresh out of
medical college, and fresh out of luck. Failing to read the fine
print in his scholarship conditions, he finds he has no choice but
to move to the remote and somewhat eccentric town of Cicely, in the
wilds of Alaska.
Once there, he is welcomed by the peculiar
locals who are not keen to see him go, most especially Maurice
Minnifield, the ex-NASA astronaut. Despite Joel's adamant denials,
one gets the impression that he enjoys life in Cicely more than he
admits. |

Description:
Dr. Joel Fleishman (Rob Morrow) never wanted to leave New York, but
the lure of paying off his medical school bills by working in a
remote area seems too good to pass up. However, the quirky citizens
and sheer inconvenience of small town Alaska have him pining for the
next flight back to Manhattan. Though Joel grudgingly stays, it
takes him a while to adjust. What with the town's feisty
mayor/pilot, Maggie (Janine Turner); ex-astronaut turned pompous
millionaire Maurice J. Minnifield (Barry Corbin); and Joel's
problems with the cycles of the sun, the weather, and everything
else about the wild country, each episode provides a wealth of rich
character studies and complex, universally appealing humour.
Contains all six series of the show.
Joel Fleischmann is a quintessential New Yorker who has never been
west of the Mississippi. Intent on becoming a doctor, but lacking
the financial backing, he mailed out seventy-five scholarship
applications in the hope of fulfilling his dream. Regardless of all
his effort, Joel receives just one reply, from the State of Alaska,
and in return for his scholarship has to agree to be their
indentured slave for the following years in the small
middle-of-nowhere town, Cicely.
Recipient of countless Emmy nominations and winner of the Emmy and
Golden Globe awards for Outstanding Drama Series, Northern Exposure
comes to an offbeat and inspirational conclusion.
Enjoy once again, now fully restored and in hi-definition,
all 110 episodes, over 6 seasons, with all the original music as you remember
