Used to produce Raney nickel (catalyst), nickel alloys (as a deoxidant), for hydrogenation of organic compounds in an alkaline environment (as a catalyst and hydrogen source).

This is the most straightforward procedure for the most active catalyst, but it can be simplified by removing the hydrogen atmosphere.
