This is an exceptional hand-colored original stone lithograph from the Octavo 2nd edition of the "Quadrupeds of North America" by America's greatest naturalist, John James Audubon (1785-1851). After completing his highly successful and monumental masterpiece, "The Birds of America", with encouragement from his good friend Rev. John Bachman (Charleston, SC), Audubon proceeded together with his two sons John Woodhouse Audubon and Victor Gifford Audubon and Rev. John Bachman to work from 1843 to 1848, and published the Imperial Folio edition (print size ~ 28" x 22") of “The Viviparous Quadrupeds Of North America”. Most of the images of the quadrupeds were drawn by Audubon himself, and some images by John Woodhouse. Victor Gifford painted the beautiful background scenery for these quadruped plates. John Bachman provided the narrative for each quadruped. Following its successful publication, Audubon's sons proceeded to publish the smaller size Octavo Edition of the "Quadrupeds of North America" in three volumes with a total of 155 plates, to make them more affordable to the citizens. Audubon's sons used Camera Lucida to reduce the size of the Imperial Folio edition prints to the smaller Octavo edition size (~ 10 x 6 1/2") , and published them as hand-colored stone lithographs. The first Octavo edition was published during 1849-1854. The 2nd edition was published during 1852-1854.
The current listing of "Plate 92: Texan Lynx" is from the 2nd Octavo Edition. This particular print is a rare "state" among the plate 92 images printed in J. T. Bowen's shop since it lacks the usual credits at the bottom left (to Audubon) and right (to Bowen). This lithograph came from a bound volume of the Octavo edition, and shows the cdharacteristic binding edge at the top (see front and verso Pics). This lithograph is accompanied by original text pages (see Pic) from the Octavo edition. Overall condition is very good, and commensurate with its age.
