BMW's N54 Engine had two versions of computers managing it: MSD80 and MSD80

The MSD80 DME has two common points of failure on a hardware level:

1) MOSFET failure

MOSFETs are electronic components on the MSD80 board that do fail due to age or stress from high performance. When one of them fails, it causes the vehicle to misfire and go into limp mode. When a MOSFET fails, you will find misfiring occurring on bank 1 or bank 2. After MOSFET failure, you may encounter a burnt ignition coil. Replace all affected ignition coils after MOSFET failure occurs. Once or more of the following fault codes may appear:

Bank 1 misfire errors/codes:

29CD Combustion Misfire, Cylinder 1
29CE Combustion Misfire, Cylinder 2
29CF Combustion Misfire, Cylinder 3
30BA DME digital motor electronics, internal failure

​Bank 2 misfire errors/codes:

29D0 Combustion Misfire, Cylinder 4
29D1 Combustion Misfire, Cylinder 5
29D2 Combustion Misfire, Cylinder 6
30BB DME digital motor electronics, internal failure


​2) PSUs on board (Power Supply Units, one per bank)

Each PSU feeds electrical components of a specific bank. PSU failure is more rare than MOSFETs failure, but when it happens you get the same symptoms as in the case of failed MOSFET with the same error/codes.

Upgrade your problematic MSD80 DME with the more robust & updated version, the MSD81. It has no weak points and comes with stronger MOSFETs and PSUs.

This service will transfer VIN, immobilizer, software and coding (including injector coding) to the replacement upgraded MSD81 DME. The replacement DME will be Plug n' Drive and will require no additional programming. Old keys will work. Simply install the ECU and start the car.


After purchasing this service, send in the original MSD80 DME, your replacement donor MSD81 DME, original CAS module, and original working key. 


If your original MSD80 DME is being replaced due to no communication with the module, injector numbers will need to be read from the injectors located on top of your engine.
