He was Santa Scholastica's twin brother. He was designated patron of Europe by Pope Paul VI in 1964 and is also patron of Germany. He is venerated not only by Catholics, but also by Orthodox. He was the founder of the Abbey of Monte Cassino in Italy, destroyed in World War II and later restored.
