Some background on the book & author:

"Born into slavery in Louisiana and freed under the Emancipation Proclamation, John R. Lynch was the first African-American Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives, and among the first generation of African Americans elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving from 1873-1877 and again in the 1880s."

“In 1913 he published his Facts of Reconstruction, in an effort to set the record straight about the part played by Negroes in that tragic era. It is easily the best account of Reconstruction by a Negro participant.”

This book includes an account of an interview between Lynch and President Grover Cleveland, as well as portraits of Black members of Congress.
