SOLIDARNOSC
SOLIDARITY was the first independent labor union in a Soviet Block country.
It was founded in Poland in 1980. The union was forcibly suppressed
by the Polish government in 1981. Its leader, LECH WALESA, led 17,000
workers from the Lenin Shipyards, in Gdansk, in a strike. This pin, with the logo of the
Polish Solidarity Movement, was worn by labor unions in the United States to show "solidarity"
with the Polish workers. American union workers wore this pin during the uprising in Gdansk.
