Antique Old Primitive MUNISING BOWLS

  • I believe these are maple - based on the color and tight wood grain
CONDITION:
  • These are from a recent estate and are good condition with normal vintage marks and scratches.
  • No cracks, chips, or defects.  
  • They appear to have been painted or whitewashed on the outside (I don't know if this was original or someone wanted to add to the shabby chic appearance.  I did not try to scrub it off.)
ABOUT MUNISING BOWLS:
Munising bowls are vintage wood bowls that were manufactured in Upper Peninsula, Michigan, by Munising Wood Products. The factory operated in its namesake town from 1911 to 1955.  These vintage pieces come either with a wood finish, or painted. They’re made with maple or beech, and can be identified with a stamp of “Munising” on the bottom. You can distinguish authentic bowls because they’re carved as one piece from a log in a process that cuts each bowl in succession to easily nest into each other.

Also, provided by a fellow eBay associate: "this little bowl was manufactured in the late 1940's or maybe early 50's. These little ones were latecomers to the original 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21 inch versions made from about 1915 to 1945. Rather than being butter bowls or mixing bowls, they were salad bowls meant to go with a larger, say 11 inch, salad bowl."

SIZE:
  • These adorable little bowls are slightly oval in shape and measure approximately 6.5 inches x 6 inches and about 1.5 inches tall.
