From the Collector's Note: At age 10, Lyndsay Faye discovered stories about Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Her fascination with the character has never abated. After moving to New York City in 2005 to audition for theater work, she became disappointed with a Sherlock Holmes-meets-Jack the Ripper novel she was reading. So, she decided to write her own. The result was her highly acclaimed debut novel, Dust and Shadow: An Account of the Ripper Killings by Dr. John H. Watson.

This historical thriller, taking place on the gritty streets of 19th-century London, is a marvelous tribute to the aloof genius of the famous sleuth and his good-hearted friend. Determined to capture the savage monster responsible for terrorizing London's East End, Holmes is physically wounded in Whitechapel, then sees his credibility stripped by the press, who question the detective's role in the crimes he struggles to prevent. Holmes finds he's left with no choice but to break rules in a race to stop the madman known as "The Knife" before it's too late. Faye not only masterfully recreates history's most diabolical villain and stays true to Doyle's well-known characters, but also brings authenticity to the atmosphere of London and its Whitechapel district. Leslie Klinger, editor of The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes, called Dust and Shadow "a rare gem" and "a never-told-story about Sherlock Holmes that rings true."

Faye was born Lyndsay Farber Lehner in California and raised in Washington. She graduated with a dual degree in English and performance from Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California, then began an acting career in the Bay Area. Her other books include The Gods of Gotham (2012), named the year's best mystery novel the the American Library Association, and Jane Steele (2016), both of which were nominated for the Edgar Award.
