Outside of their job as Wi-Fi extenders or bridges, they provide an easy way to set up a whole home audio system.  I've found that they are best if they're wired to ethernet for Airplay, but they also do well as wireless airplay receivers.  The back audio port can work with either a normal 3.5mm aux cable or a 3.5mm mini TOSlink optical cable.
