Each Nut has a different application. Different types of Lock Mechanisms to suit your needs.
NOTE: 1 Pack of 5 will contain - 5 individual items - So 5 Nuts - These will all be the same type!
Information:
I am often asked to make a recommendation regarding which style of lock nut to use. (NEVER has my wife asked me this question!!)
The purpose of a Lock Nut - regardless of its type is to prevent all the collected items becoming single parts!
I will start by saying that the answer to that question is not easy! The two most common lock nut groups are the Prevailing Torque Group and the Surface-bearing Group.
In the Prevailing Torque Group, we carry the nyloc insert locknuts and the all-steel "stover" grade 10 lock nuts
In the Surface -bearing Group, we carry the serrated flange nuts - In Mild Steel Zinc Plated And Plain Also In Stainless Steel (Marine Grade A4)
All of these are good effective locknuts when used in the right context, but the decision is yours as personal preference is what dictates your decision.
Here are a few considerations:
Temperature: Obviously you would not use a nylock on an exhaust system since the heat would melt it rendering the locking mechanism useless!
Size and shape of the hole: If the hole is oversized, a flange nut is a great way to go versus a flat washer.
Length of thread exposure: Top lock versus center or bottom lock. If the thread is 300mm long and you are only fixing flat pack shelving etc together - you don't want to be winding a nyloc nut all that way!!
Re-use: An all-steel nut (Stover Style) is harder on the threads of the bolt than any of the other styles.
Materials: If you are using serrated flange then the mating material needs to be softer than the nut / bolt so that the serrations can indent the material and use their locking system.
Magnetism: DO the nuts need to be Non- Magnetic, SO as not to apply electro magnetic forces!
Tensile Strength: Stainless Should never be used instead of Mild Steel - Always better to go for a Higher Grade Nut. Safety First!
Length of exposed thread: The Stainless Steel Dome Nuts can only accept the thread for a certain depth and then they will bottom out on the top.
Weldability: You may have nuts that need to be welded onto a frame - depending on what the frame is made of will alter this decision. Nyloc Nuts dont take too kindly for welding"
Bling Factor: Stainless Will Always win here!
Environment - Marine? - Stainless?
VIbration: If you have a lot of Vibration - Is this normal? If so I have used the Stover Type Nut in combination with Loctite 270 with great results.
For prevention of Bolts falling out - I would recommend Nord-Lock Washers - I digress! - These are my findings only - I am only trying to offer a little advice.
If you are an engineer - then you can skip these / any recommendations - This is where engineers should start!!
Types Sold:
M6 Plain Serrated Flange Nuts - Great If you intend to paint item - great if they are going to be used on a conveyor belt and looks are not important
M6 Zinc Plated Flange Nuts - Great Protection against the environment
M6 Nyloc Nuts - Grade 8.8 - Fantastic Little Item for pretty much every normal application - nice and strong -
M6 Yellow Passivated Nyloc Nuts - Grade 10 - Very Very Good Nuts - slightly taller than a normal nut as are Grade 10
M6 "Stover Style" All Steel Nuts - Grade 10 - Fit And Forget! - My Favourites - I know I'm not meant to have favourites!
M6 Stainless Steel A4 Marine Grade Nyloc Nuts - Great where tensile strength is low - still offer good strength - will stay shiny for years.
M6 Stainless Steel - Serrated Flange Nuts - Great on other stainless products Or Where item is a show piece etc - look the part
