Flames of War: Soviet Starter Force: Heavy Assault Group (Late-War)

MPN SUAB13

They had broken through the flattened frontline village in good time and were heading to their next objective when a shell screeched off sideways from the heavy front plate of Vladimir’s glorious new Iosif Stalin II breakthrough tank. From his seat in the turret he quickly scanned to the left, where he thought it was fired from, and saw a likely copse of trees. He found he was grinning like a wolf as he knew the gunners would be scared after fumbling their first shot. The enemy unit they were punching through were freshly constructed from remnants of battalions falling back from the fury of the Soviet summer offensive, while his regiment knew their rough business.

As their tank continued to advance he ordered immediate action, “Gregory Gregorovich, shake up that stand of trees to the left with high explosive.” Then he lightly nudged the driver on the left shoulder to start angling across the burnt field to help guide the massive 122mm cannon onto the likely enemy positions. Vladimir checked through his vision blocks that the other tanks in his regiment were not having trouble, as they exited the village and straightened out their formation into the fields beyond.

He could see the angled gun shield slightly silhouetted against the sunlight and bushes just before his gunner obliterated the enemy gun in a giant explosion and dust cloud. These 122mm rounds were unforgiving, he remembered being told that they held almost 4 kilograms of high explosive and generated a thick cloud of fragmentation to turn their target into borscht. They truly did respond with a double bass against the German accordion.

As rifle and machine-gun fire began spattering from their heavy armour, the unit dismounted their desant troops. They then began to clear the position, with the help of their big brothers. Vladimir had time to look ahead along their route of advance and noted a few more nearby areas with obstacles that may need attention, they had to keep up their breakthrough, holding the fascists to the ground with bloody kicks. Vladimir had seen the brutality and devastation that had been sown during the Soviet retreat in 1941 and knew his unit would be key to return the favour to the Hitlerites during their renewed advance.
