This lovely globe could have a number of uses. It could be a ring and/or jewelry holder at home. It could hold small items on a desk like paper clip or zip drives. The globe is made of gemstones cut and inlaid (marquetry) to form the oceans and countries. I think the base may be wood but it could be faux wood.
