This part can usually be replaced without removing the pump from your vehicle.  90% of faults are with the suction control valve rather than the actual pump which can be costly. 
Some symptoms of a faulty valve can be that there is a diesel leak or that your vehicle will not start or will cut out when running.  There could also be blue / black smoke coming from your exhaust and poor fuel economy.
