This is an ancient Kyo Yaki style bowl (chawan) from the famous potter Kanoo Mitsuo for the Japanese ceremony. Its cylindrical shape is an unique characteristic of this potter. The black marks on the bowl are made by iron brush and it is supposed to bring warmth to the bowl.
Kanoo Mitsuo (1903-1970)
Kanoo Mitsuo was born in 1903 on Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. He developed a unique barrel-shaped bowl style for the tea ceremony throughout his career. In particular, he studied at the Kyoto Procelaine Laboratory. He has also participated in numerous international exhibitions and received several awards for his work.
