From the Introduction: In August 1772, a young man locked himself in his room and embarked on a hunger strike; life was no longer worth living. Jacquess-Louis David had failed to win the Academie Grand Prix for painting. David's career was built on a masterful exposition of the Stoic virtues, but his first appearance on the stage of history is closer to the behaviour of a Romantic hero. Fortunately, his mentor Sedaine, secretary of the Academie d'architecture, and Doyen, one of his teachers, made him see reason. Before long, the sulking youth had single-handedly wrought a revolution in art. In 1860, Delacroix observed: "He was the father of the whole modern school in painting and sculpture; he reformed our architecture too, and even the furniture in everyday use."

David's achievement, which had briefly fallen out of favour, is today clearer than ever. The fascination it held for his contemporaries has again taken hold. The crowds who make their way through the Louvre to see The Coronation of Napoleon testify to David's stature as an artist, only the room where the Mona Lisa hangs can boast more visitors. To understand his genious, we must grasp both the passionate character of the man and the times in which he lived, times "full of sound and fury". Rarely has an artist's work formed so integral a part of history.
