This is a most versatile ceiling speaker indeed.  Although originally designed for bathrooms where very high-humidity accumulates (the speakers are totally protected as you will see in the photos below, even the rears have protection), we also use these speakers in hallways, on outside decks, and and anywhere else we need to hear "both left and right channels" in a small area.   The goal in designing this unit was to be able to maintain "true stereo", and not simply to combine the signals together to achieve mono from stereo.  Take a look at the many photos below. You will easily notice that EACH TWEETER is slightly angled to project that channels sound in a slightly different direction. As hi-end frequencies reflect, it works very well. For the low-end, two separate woofer-coils are stacked on top of each other to operate the same woofer cone.

The unusual design specifications of this speaker incorporates both high-humidity tolerance AND dual voice coils.   This was because two speakers can look "over done" in many smaller bathrooms, so this unit was designed with TWO TOTALLY INDEPENDENT INPUTS. Being in the installation business for over 25 years, personally I still recommend using two speakers (yes even in bathrooms) for optimum separation and sound dispersion. People tend to take for granted the difference good separation makes.  In one of the photos below you will see a small bathroom with 3 speakers installed above the shower.  Two of these are  this dual-voice coil speaker, and and the center one is the 61 series we also sell.  While this is not a typical bathroom installation, the end-sound is totally awesome.  If you do decide to use two of these in your room instead of one, you must wire the two inputs on the same speaker in parallel (then the dual tweeters will really spread out the sound nicely).  But if you know you only want to install JUST ONE SPEAKER for decor purposes, you will still be quite pleased with the result..  This speaker is 9 inches (total footprint on ceiling after installed) so it also matches large recessed lighting fixtures well. This speaker uses the exact same cutout template as our 61 series speaker we sell at www.private-ebay.com (the only other 6.5" round unit we sell).  That unit also works well in bathrooms, but has one tweeter/input channel as opposed to this units two.

Concerning the weatherproof rating of this speaker, it is well protected. Far more than necessary (for bathrooms) in my opinion.  In fact since we normally install two speakers in bathrooms, I often use the 61 series speaker we sell at www.private-ebay.com for them (single channel) so they totally match the rest of the speakers in the house (we do entire home installs).  We do, however, use these units for when customers insist on only one unit in a bathroom, and most commonly we use these on outside decks which are NOT covered and protected from the elements. And of course we use these anywhere else we NEED to get stereo sound from the same unit; the separation really is excellent.  If you are considering this unit for an outside deck, it is a great choice, BUT:  If your deck is covered and protected from direct weather, I suggest you go with the 81 series larger 8" (about 11" after install) speaker we sell at www.private-ebay.com. It holds up very well outside so long as it is a COVERED deck.  For uncovered decks where direct weather hits the speaker, this weather-rated speaker (the listing you are viewing now) is the best option in a ceiling-mount.

Wiring Note for this speaker:  It is absolutely essential to get the correct polarity on this speaker. Negative to Negative and Positive to Positive. Reversing polarity will destroy the speaker since 90% of all power would be given off in heat dissipation instead of sound (if wired incorrectly).  So if running TRUE STEREO SOUND to one of these speakers, ensure - to - and + to + on each input, and if running this speaker as ONE CHANNEL, then connect the two +s together and the two -s together and run them back to your receiver.  Also note that since the voice coils are 8ohms each, wiring them together into one channel will give you a 4ohm load.  We know our products inside and out.
