He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Québec. He also studied in the San Francisco Academy of Arts in California. Throughout his career Dumas has become well-known as an illustrator, theatre set designer, printmaker, and painter. His works often make social commentary and arouse curiosity, he uses bold colours and usually incorporates many figures in his works. He has been a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts since 1980. Dumas was a professor at the École des arts visuels de l'Université Laval de Québec from 1970-97. In 1976, he created three stamps for Canada Post. in 1977, Art Global published an Anne Hébert “Kamouraska” with ten of his original prints. He has exhibited across Canada, often in Québec.
