A poem by the Danish author J.P. Jacobsen may serve as a motto for Swedish choral music from the decades around the turn of the last century. Jacobsen's "Stemning" ("Atmosphere"), with its singular atmosphere of Nordic evening mystique, has enticed all three of the composers represented on this recording. Fairy tale motifs, woodland darkness and yearning for the Orient are other themes in this selection, which also manifests the predilection of the time for the Swedish folk song, in arrangements as well as in models.
