This is an AUTHENTIC (NOT a modern reprint), vintage 1929 photogravure by the renowned photographer, teacher and artist Professor Karl Blossfeldt. Catapulted to international fame some 80 years ago by his amazing isolated close up photographs of strange botanical forms, Blossfeldt was an early pioneer in the transformation of photography from a medium of documentation to that of an art form. He devoted his entire 30 year career to the close up photographing of plant sections creating engaging images which crossed into the abstract art world. Blossfeldt designed and made his own camera which allowed him to magnify his plant specimens up to 30 times their actual size. Today he is considered an important and influential figure in photographic history and his work is held in numerous collections and museums throughout the world. IMPORTANT NOTE: These may be the most difficult prints we have ever tried to make scans of - a testament to the fine gravure printing of these images as they possess the best qualities for which gravure is known - subtle shading and a wide range of delicate tone. This delicate and subtle toning/shading (particularly the background) in many cases cannot be accurately picked up by the scanner. There is a light shaded/tinted background behind the botanical subject in many of these plates which the scanner cannot pick up - it therefor appears as a white background in these web scans when in fact there is a soft light teal color field behind the botanical subject as a backdrop. This photogravure is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) with unique individual registered serial number from the Finephoto Vintage Archive & Database. Under magnification this plate shows a tight "honeycomb" cell structure, uniform pressing of ink and a wide range of tone - all indicative of a quality sheet fed gravure print. The watermark word "Finephoto" does not appear on the actual print. |
